Gaharu Berjaya Resources target to plant one million gaharu (agarwood) saplings in five to seven years may be a reality soon as the local company is eyeing to plant over three milion trees in wasan, Brunei-Muara and Labu Estate, Temburong.
The Labu Estate project, where seedlings will be planted on a 3000-acre land, is still in the process of negotiation with the ministry of industry and Primary Resources.
In Wasan, the planting will be done on 100 acres of land, pending an MOU signing with Wasan Vocational School, said Gaharu Berjaya Resources admin and marketing Supervisor, Ak Indra Yura Pg Anak Hj Metussin.
Gaharu Berjaya Resources has already planted more than 13,000 trees since its es-tablishment last year.
Ak Indra Yura also spoke of the company's plan to open their own factory 9thriugh a joint venture).
"we hope that we will be able to set up a factory so that we can produce Brunei's own gaharu products," he told the media during a gaharu tree planting activity at the kg Pengkalan Batu Mosque.
A total of 11 gaharu seedlings were contributed and planted as part of the public awareness campaign by the company.
the trees were planted at the compound of the mosque by Kg Pengkalan Batu village head, Hj Bakar Hj Tinggal together with Gaharu Berjaya Resources Managing Director, Hj Mohammad Ali Hj Dollah.
The trees's resin is used to manufacture oils, lotions or soaps.Young Gaharu leaves can also be collected after a year and half and processed to green tea.The product enjoys high demand in the Middle East, Taiwan and Japan.
"We can expand this not only in brunei but also Southeast Asia," said Ak Indra Yura.
"Brunei has fertile land (suitable) for planting gaharu trees, why not we plant it? it can help the nation's economy," he added.
Researchers have discovered 17 species of gaharu throughout Southeast Asia and six comes from Brunei.The six species are Malaccensis, Baccarian, Macrocarpa, Filaria, Subintegra and Hirta.
The Malaccensis are the common ones that are being commercialised due to its rapid growth and suitability with Brunei's soil.
