Ex-Army Veterans go green

The Ex-Army Veteran Association in Brunei-Muara received 16 'Gaharu' (Agarwood) saplings from Syarikat Gaharu Berjaya Association during a ceremony at the Ex-Army Veteran Association Headquarters in Kg Anggerek Desa yesterday.
On hand to receive the saplings on behalf of the Ex-Army Veteran Association in Brunei-Muara was the guest of honour, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Hj Mohammad bin Hj Daud, the association's top advisor.
Gaharu Berjaya Resources has donated saplings to a number of organisations in the past, including Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), in a bid to raise awareness on the importance of protecting and conserving Brunei Darussalam's lush forests, which are rich in biodiversity and resources.
According to Awang Mohd Ali bin Dollah, the Managing Director of Gaharu Berjaya Resources, the importance of Gaharu, which is listed under the protected species by CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), where in the law of Brunei Darussalam states that those caught selling it without a permit could be slapped with a $500,000 fine and/or five years' imprisonment.
He added that yesterday's contribution to the Ex-Army Veteran Association in Brunei-Muara was held in conjunction with World Forestry Day.
Awang Hj Jaya bin Hj Mohammad, the Deputy Chairman of the Ex-Army Veteran Association in Brunei-Muara, noted that yesterday's contribution from Gaharu Berjaya Resources was a valuable addition to the association's efforts to make a green compound.
This supports the aspirations of the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam of planting at least one Gaharu tree at every house compound.
