IN ITS continuous efforts to conserve the endangered gaharu (agarwood), the Gaharu Berjaya Resources contributed 15 gaharu saplings to the Wasan Vocational School yesterday.
"The gaharu trees is included in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) act, we must work together to maintain the existence for future generations," said Marketing Manager of Gaharu Berjaya Resources Nazirul Hyatt Saffar.
Giving a talk to the students and staff of the educational institution he highlighted the importance of harvesting gaharu trees and how the company hoped that this would raise public awareness on its rarity and value.
"The increasing demand for gaharu-made products has resulted in the depletion of wild gaharu trees and they are now considered endangered because they are often stolen by the irresponsible parties," said the marketing manager.
The country has an ideal environment for planting these trees especially when the quality of its gaharu extract is considered to be among the most expensive kind in terms of being beneficial to the economy via the production of various products including perfume, health supplements, soaps, toothpaste, medical sources and cosmetics that can be exported. The company hopes to work together with the Wasan Vocational School in the study of finding solutions to preserve and protect gaharu trees.
"Researchers have discovered 17 species of gaharu throughout Southeast Asia and six comes from Brunei," said Nazirul. He added that for a start, their aim is to provide information about the importance of this aspect of gaharu tree identification, care and maintenance.
Present at the event were Gaharu Berjaya Resources Managing Director Hj Mohamad Ali Hj Dollah and Principal of Wasan Vocational School Saiful Rizal Hj Marali, who both led in the planting of the tree sapling in a garden in front of the main entrance to the institution's administration building.
The company will also be holding similar activity in Bangar, Temburong, on April 24.
The initiative was to support the government's effort in raising awareness on environmental issues as well as trying to develop the sense of responsibility by educating the population to protect and conserve the environment.
Gaharu Berjaya Resources, a locally owned company, is one of the few establishments dealing with the valuable endangered agarwood, an industry believed to be generating US$1.2 billion in Singapore.
