Temburong - Syarikat Gaharu Berjaya Resources, with the cooperation of Syarikat Agarwood Resources and the Kampong Menengah Village Consultative Council yesterday opened a new Gaharu tree plantation in a ceremony held in Kg Menengah in the Temburong District.
On hand to officiate the opening of the "Muhammad Ibnu Said Gaharu tree plantation" was Ampuan Hj Momin bin Ampuan Salleh, Advisor to the Kg Menengah Village Consultative Council.
Fully owned by Hjh Rafiah binti Hj Momin, the Gaharu tree plantation marks a new milestone for the community in the district as a possible area for eco-tourism initiatives.
The main objective of the new gaharu plantation is to highlight the potential benefits that Gaharu trees (of the genus Acquilaria) could bring to the Temburong District community, while at the same time helping to launch Gaharu Brunei as a national treasure.
The move will also promote the district as a clean and green destination.
The idea to open up the plantation was initially conceived in 2008 but the project implementation was postponed due to seasonal floods at the time.
The project was revived in 2010 for commercial purposes, undergoing a number of stages during the production process.
In the course of its development, the new Gaharu tree plantation is anticipated to be a promising source for the country's economy, with Brunei one day opening up new factories to process and manufacture quality commercial Gaharu products in a way that is competitive with other countries. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
