IN a greening effort, Giant Hypermarket Tasek Rimba held a tree planting ceremony with Gaharu Berjaya Resources on the premises yesterday morning.
For this effort, Gaharu Berjaya Resources has contributed five gaharu trees to Giant as part of its drive to promote Green Environment Day.
Present as the guest of honour at the ceremony was Director of Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (Jastre) Hj Zakaria Hj Seruddin.
Also present were Hj Abd Latip Isnin, general manager of Giant Hypermarket Tasek Rimba, Hj Mohd Ali Hj Dolah, director of Gaharu Berjaya Resources, Hj Abd Rashid Hj Abd Razak, director of Fleet Resources and Development Sdn Bhd and Pg Refiah Pg Hj Sabtu, Complex manager of Giant Hypermarket Tasek Rimba as well as staff of Giant Hypermarket Tasek Rimba.
The officiation ceremony was marked with the planting of the five gaharu trees simultaneously by the guest of honour, Hj Abd Latip, Hj Mohd Ali, Hj Abd Rashid and Pg Refiah.
In his speech prior to the tree planting, Hj Mohd Ali stressed on the importance of conserving and harvesting of the gaharu trees in Brunei Darussalam.
He stated that at present, there are 17 species of gaharu in East Asia and six of them are found in Brunei.
The director of Gaharu Berjaya Resources added that in the "past 80 years, the gaharu trees in the Brunei forest have fallen to victims of illegal logging by irresponsible parties".
Gaharu trees are listed under the wild plants protection act under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species), hence, the protection of the Gaharu trees is of importance.
Gaharu is use in manufacturing green tea, various types of perfumes, soap and bath merchandises, body lotion, shampoo, toothpaste and many others. The Brunei Times
